• Cataract Surgery

  At Coastal Vision Center, enhancing your vision is our highest priority, and we use the most up-to-date technology to examine your eyes to verify their health or need for medical or surgical intervention. If cataract surgery has been recommended, you have come to the right place! Dr. Russell Stackhouse and Dr. Capritta Roberts are both board-certified ophthalmologists that specialize in cataract surgery and lens replacements, performing almost 3000 total surgeries each year. About Cataracts Over 20.5 million Americans over the age of 40 years of age have a cataract in at least one eye and is part of the normal aging process. As the cataracts progress, the symptoms detailed below may become more apparent: Your vision is cloudy or blurry You feel unsafe driving at night due to glare or halos around lights You need more light to read or cannot see well at night You have to change the prescription of your glasses or contact lenses often You find the clarity of your vision has decreased As soon as the above symptoms start to impair your quality of life, it is time to seek out treatment for your cataracts to get you back to clearer vision! Cataract Surgery Cataract surgery is performed on one eye at a time and involves removing the eye’s cloudy lens and implanting an artificial replacement lens to restore clear vision. This procedure takes less than 30 minutes to perform, during which your doctor will use anesthetic drops to completely numb the eye. A small incision is then made in the cornea, from which point an ultrasonic probe is used to break up and remove the natural lens of the eye; this is a minimally invasive and safe process, causing little to no discomfort. An IOL implant, or intraocular lens, is then placed into the eye. Once the procedure is complete, the incision will heal naturally which normally takes between 24 to 48 hours. Choosing an Intraocular Lens Implant for Cataract Surgery When the decision is made that it is time for cataract surgery, get the most value out of the procedure by choosing to receive a premium intraocular lens (IOL) implant. Traditional IOL’s incorporate your vision prescription for either nearsightedness or farsightedness, but you may still need to wear glasses to see at some distances. However, when you choose premium IOL’s, you will regain clear, crisp vision once again. • Corneal Surgery

  When It Comes to Cornea Surgery, We Have You Covered! Many people today deal with severe vision problems that require an experienced corneal surgeon, and we are proud to have the only two Fellowship-trained Corneal Surgery and Refractive Surgery Physicians living and working in the Nassau county area, Drs. Russell Stackhouse and Capritta Roberts. Our doctors are passionate about using their experience to treat vision disease and other eye health problems, including issues pertaining to the cornea. What is Corneal Surgery The cornea is the transparent part or windshield of your eye that covers the iris and the pupil and allows light to enter the inside. If the cornea is abnormal for any reason, light will not pass through it properly causing poor vision. Several factors can cause diseases or abnormalities of the cornea, including certain inherited conditions, eye trauma, scaring, or untreated eye infections. If your cornea is severely damaged or your vision is impaired because of a cloudy or irregular-shaped cornea that does not improve with medical therapy or contact lenses, then you may be a good candidate for corneal surgery, including a cornea transplant. In this procedure, our physician will remove the damaged cornea and replace it with healthy donor tissue to help restore impaired vision, relieve pain, and protect the inner structure of the eye. • Medical Conditions We Treat

  Our physicians treat patients from all over Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, including the Fernandina Beach, Callahan, Macclenny, Waycross, and Kinsgland areas. Many of our patients come to us with medical conditions which require individualized treatment plans and personalized care, all of which can be found here at Coastal Vision Center. Some of the eye conditions treated at Coastal Vision Center include the following: Cataracts A cataract is a clouding or discoloring of the normally clear lens of the eye, a normal part of the aging process caused by years of exposure to sunlight. The clouded lens distorts and blocks the passage of light through the eye to the retina, causing vision to be dull, blurred, and indistinct. While cataracts can affect people of any age, they are most common in adults over the age of 60. Our Board-Certified Ophthalmologists provide surgical options to remove the cataract to help restore clear vision. Corneal Disease and Corneal Treatments When the cornea becomes diseased, scarred, or irregularly shaped, the eye cannot see clearly. The experienced physicians at Coastal Vision Center can evaluate the condition and prescribe the most effective treatment that may include medical therapy or contact lenses. Corneal transplantation may also be required if the cornea does not respond to or improve with medical therapy. Our Board-Certified and Fellowship-Trained Corneal and Refractive Surgery Physicians are experienced with this procedure and will replace the damaged cornea with a clear, healthy donor tissue to restore vision. Diabetic Retinopathy Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication that can occur with diabetes. This eye condition is the result of the optic nerve becoming damaged when erratic blood sugar levels cause damage to the retina’s blood vessels. This can result in distorted vision, vision loss, and even permanent blindness if left untreated. People with diabetes should schedule an eye exam at least once per year or more often if they are diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and work to have strict control of their blood sugar; if there are high blood pressure or kidney problems also present, those should be treated by a Primary Care Physician or Specialist as well. The physicians at Coastal Vision Center are very experienced in this disease process and can provide treatment options to help slow its progression. Macular Degeneration Macular Degeneration, or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is an eye disease that occurs when the macula (or the central portion of the retina) deteriorates, causing loss of vision, typically the central vision. There is no cure for AMD, but our physicians at Coastal Vision Center offer treatment options to help slow the rate and amount of vision loss associated with this disease. Glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye disease that occurs when the optic nerve is damaged as a result of fluid buildup in the eye causing high eye pressure. Glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages and most people do not even know that they have it, therefore having regular eye exams can help our physicians diagnose it early to help protect vision for the long-term. Unfortunately, damage from glaucoma is irreversible, but treatment options can include medicated eye drops, Durysta® ocular implants, or surgical options, all working to reduce the pressure in the eye and protect vision for the long-term. Chalazion/Stye Both a chalazion and stye show up as red or swollen lumps on the eyelid that may or may not be painful and are linked to an infection of the eyelid. In addition, both conditions are typically benign and will disappear on their own without treatment, however, treatment may be necessary if the condition worsens over time. Normally these conditions can be effectively treated with an antibiotic ointment prescribed by one of our doctors at Coastal Vision Center. However, a minor surgical procedure may have to be performed with a small incision in the eyelid in order to remove the infected area if the condition worsens, returns repeatedly, or blocks a person’s vision. An evaluation of the area will be performed by our doctors to decide the best plan to treat the condition. A key part of this treatment is a comprehensive eye exam to help our doctors determine the general health of your eyes and monitor the progression of any early disease conditions to help protect your vision for the long-term. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults undergo a comprehensive eye examination every 3-5 years before the age of 45, every 2-3 years from 45-65, and every 1-2 years thereafter. What to Expect During Your Eye Exam Our experienced doctors will review your medical history closely and provide advanced diagnostic tests for screening purposes. Along with this, they will be able to diagnose any visual issues or discomfort that you may be experiencing, thoroughly review the results from the diagnostic testing, and offer affordable and effective solutions for all of your eye care needs. During eye exams, the following screening tests are utilized to best determine your eye health: Visual acuity testing to measure how clearly you are able to see the Snellen Eye Chart Optomap retinal examination along with an OCT scan of the eye to clearly examine the back of your eye to detect certain medical conditions like diabetic retinopathy, detached retina, and macular degeneration Refraction testing to help determine the lens strengths needed for your eyeglass or contact lens prescription, if applicable Slit-lamp exam to inspect the outer portion of the eye (eyelids and eyelashes), along with the cornea, iris, and fluid in the chamber between the two Tonometry testing to measure the pressure inside the eye These tests provide our doctors with the information needed to create prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses. Gas Permeable Lenses: These are an alternative to soft contact lenses and are made from a hard, oxygen-permeable material.
